Groups Withdrawing Support from Boy Scouts
Editor's Note: This list will
be updated as new VERIFIED information comes in. If you know of
other local Boy Scout Troops who are experiencing a reduction
in contributions due to United Way or business organizations,
please e-mail us at Director@saveourscouts.org
and let us know. We hope to keep you informed of the status of
this effort to financially intimidate the Scouts. As of today
(September 7, 2000) SAVE OUR SCOUTS has not verified a list of
corporate donors which have been accused of withdrawing their
support from the Boy Scouts. We will not list any group we have
not verified. With that in mind, one of the businesses on a list
making the rounds on the Internet is Chase Manhattan Bank. We
did not list them, because we did not have verification that they
actually had withdrawn support from the Boy Scouts. As it turns
out, that accusation was false. To access the statement on the
Boy Scouts of America issued by the Chase Manhattan Bank.
There are over 1400 local United
Way Charters. Only a small number of the 1400 United Ways have
pulled their support of Councils in their areas. I encourage you
to call your local United Way and ask them if they have or have
had in the past, grants for the Local BSA Council. And do they
continue to support the Council. There are Councils who because
of other fundraising methods do not need to ask their Local United
Way for help. Not all Councils receive funds from the United Way
in their area. United Way has helped many groups, who help those
in need. We thank United Way for all the good they do. We encourage
them to continue to help BSA help the at risk young men.
Levi Strauss- As of early in the 1990's removed their support
of the Boy Scouts of America. There appears to be no movement
to reconsider their position. Don't forget Dockers are also
made by Levi Strauss.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - In a new policy clearly aimed at the Boy
Scouts, a United Way board in Rhode Island announced it would
no longer fund organizations that discriminate for any reason,
including sexual orientation.
The policy, to take effect in January, could deprive the state's
Narragansett Council of Boy Scouts of $200,000, according to
Wednesday's Providence Journal.
The money has funded Scout Reach, a program bringing 6,900
inner-city youths into scouting. The United Way charity is one
of the first to challenge last month's U.S. Supreme Court ruling
that the Boy Scouts, as a private organization, could ban homosexual
leaders.
Editor's note: The children who will be the most
hurt by this effort to hurt the Scouts, of course, will be the
Scouts most in need of help - the poor, the ethnic minorities,
the children of immigrant families. Other groups who have chosen
to force the Boy Scouts to abandon their standards include this
list compiled by Dr. James Dobson of Focus on the Family.(http://www.focusonthefamily.com)

Scouts in 1992 based on "non-discrimination" policy. Organizations
must not "discriminate" based on sexual orientation, race, religion,

However, in response to my question, they intend to continue
to fund the Girl Scouts, Women's Shelters, and Men's Shelters
all of which would appear to violate their policy against discrimination
based on sex.)

Note: If you live in Broward County, Fla., contact the United
Way of Broward County and urge them to continue funding the
Boy Scouts. Remind them of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision
upholding the Boy Scouts' right to set its own membership policies,
and ask them to honor that right by retaining funding for the
Scouts. If you currently give to the United Way, tell them you
will reconsider your giving if they decide to withhold funds
from the Boy Scouts. If you don't currently give, tell them
you definitely will not give if they decide not to fund the
Boy Scouts.

Also, if you live in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., the City Commission
is currently considering whether to continue funding for the
Boy Scouts. The Commission is scheduled to consider the issue
at its Sept. 6 meeting at 2 p.m. Please attend the meeting and
voice your support for continued funding of the Boy Scouts.
Also, contact the following city officials and urge them to
continue funding the Scouts:
Mayor Jim Naugle Phone: (954) 761-5007
(NOTE: Since the Aug. 25 broadcast by Dr. James Dobson was
aired, Mayor Naugle has contacted Focus on the Family and has
expressed his support for funding the Boy Scouts. If you do
contact Mayor Naugle, thank him for his support for the Boy
Scouts and encourage him to do whatever he can to influence
the outcome of the Commission's vote.)
Commissioner Gloria Katz (District 1)
Commissioner Tim Smith (District 2)
Commissioner Carlton Moore (District 3)
Commissioner Cindi Hutchinson (District 4)
Phone (all commissioners can be reached at either number):
(954) 761-5003; 761-5004
Step 3: Contact your local United Way office and ask whether
they currently send funds to the Boy Scouts.
If so, thank them for doing so. Encourage them to continue
to stand by the Boy Scouts, as the Scouts are under heavy fire
despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the group's constitutional
right to set its own membership policies.
If not, ask them why. Tell them you strongly oppose any decision
not to fund the Boy Scouts because of its exclusion of homosexuals.
Remind them of the Boy Scouts' constitutional right to set its
own membership policies, and ask them to honor that right by
restoring funding to the Boy Scouts. If you currently give to
the United Way, tell them you will reconsider your giving if
they don't change their policy. If you don't currently give,
tell them you definitely will not give as long as their currently
policy toward the Boy Scouts is in place.
If the United Way office tells you they are currently reviewing
its policy toward the Boy Scouts, urge the group to continue
funding the Boy Scouts. Ask them to honor the Boy Scouts' constitutional
right to set its own membership policies by retaining funding
for the Scouts.
To find out how to contact your local United Way organization,
see www.unitedway.org.
Step 4: Contact United Way of America President Betty Beene.
Voice your support for the Boy Scouts and thank Ms. Beene for
the United Way's historically close relationship with the Scouts.
Urge her to do whatever she can to pressure local United Way
groups to continue funding the Boy Scouts.
